LA Earthquake Swarm: Strong Series of 4 Point Plus Mag Quakes

Over the past 24 hours, and especially this morning, there has been frequent 4 mag plus earthquakes in one small area, which around Yorba Linda.

This Orange County city is right on the Whittier Fault, which I feel is an extension of the larger and very active Elsinor Fault. The Whittier fault has recently kicked off a 5.3, and years ago kicked of a 6 mag plus earthquake that killed a woman.

The previous strong quakes above mentioned did not have as strong of an earthquake series as today's swarm. This makes the swarm of profound interest to the geoscience community. It is also on the same fault system where there is a extended swarm of 4 mag plus earthquakes south of Mexicali. This line in that area kicked off a 7.2 mag earthquake a couple years ago, on April 4, 2010 at 4 pm.

I don't want to end up being an alarmist, because we have not perfected detecting earthquake precursors as of yet, but I will indeed encourage people to stock up on two weeks per person of water and non-perishable foods.

I have my doubts about FEMA being timely with help, especially with our current political set up, and I'd hate to see people suffer like they did after Katrina. So go out right now and stock up on water in each car, and in the house, and get your essential medications and other life supporting supplies into a backpack and with you or in your car. Please take care of yourselves. You should do this at all times in a seismic region, anyways.

I suggest watching live seismograms for that can be interesting. I suggest the i Phone apps for that, or UCSD geo-sciences live seismogram for that. Palomar College, in San Marcos has one too.

This week's series of micro-quakes near Hawthorne, Nevada, where last year's large quake swarm occurred. Researchers are looking at this area closely.


In the center of this map, you see an area north of a large lake, and between two major faults. This is a series of micro-quakes within Joshua Tree National Park, and an area linking two spreading zones. Notice the numerous parallel faults to the north of the quakes, which is typical of a spreading zone, and the parallel faults to the south, which is the same thing. The San Andreas fault is the one on the north side of the lake, and is a transform fault coming off the Salton rifting system.


Here is the waveform of a 2.0 micro-quake today, in the area north of the San Andreas Fault, and in an area linking two spreading zones. It has the appearance of an angry cat's tail, which is a possible indicator of fluid and semi-fluid high pressure matter in motion underground. Sometimes that can be magma. One can tell by measuring the release of Co2 and other gases.

Today, and this week, we are witnessing two areas of micro-quakes in areas of known previous volcanism, and possible magma chambers below ground.

One is near Hawthorne, Nevada, just east of Mammoth Lakes, CA. This is an area that had experienced thousands of micro-quakes and dozens of moderate earthquakes just last year, and it became the concern of researchers and geologists. The next series of earthquakes occurred today within Joshua Tree National Park, and are more wide spread than the current series near Hawthorne. I'm making a note on this, and it's not an alarming note at all. The reason for mentioning it, is the fact that these micro-quakes are in a rifting zone, and an area that wants to link the northern end of the East California Shear Zone with the Salton Trough Rift Valley. I believe that this what the Mojave Young Volcano System is all about, a link between two spreading zones.

In simple words, a rifting zone exists in Eastern California and Southern California, and it's trying to find a way to link up fully, and fully be a spreading zone - and some of that activity takes place as the Mojave Young Volcano System. Two tectonic plates are moving away from each other in this area, thus causing for basalt magmas to try and surface.

This waveform you see here is a fine example of a possible near surface volcanic micro-quake. I can't confirm this, but can give an educated guess. It would require a team of researchers to confirm that this is indeed volcanic in nature.

Today, there have been a renewed series of small to moderate, mainly in the 3 mag range, just south of Mexicali, in Baja California. These quakes are all in one particular spot, and a few weeks ago, the same thing happened in the same area. This area is where the 7.2 mag 2010 Easter Earthquake happened. I have been feeling the ground move, lately. These little quakes are apparent, and there are a lot of them. I cannot place any meaning to them, but they are worth taking a look at to try and find the nature of them.

The area is in the midst of a rifting zone, where the tectonic plates are pulling apart. It's an area of volcanism and frequent earthquakes. It is a part of the mid-pacific range, and extends up through eastern California.

Today, and the day before, Mexicali has experienced a renewed swarm of earthquakes in the plus 4 point and plus 3 point magnitude. I feel that perhaps these just may be precursors to a larger seismic event. I could be completely wrong, and hope that I am - but this current swarm is worth considering, and worthing thinking about.

I implore that residents of the Southern Californian and Baja California Norte regions take pre-cautions and stock up on stored water and non-parishable foods.

Take a look at the earthquake map, and give this some thought and discussion among your friends. This may well be nothing, or something. I'm feeling the shaking, and it's pretty frequent. It's going on tonight and the house creaks now and then.



NOTE: This current swarm is more intense than the one before the 7.2 magnitude Easter Earthquake a couple of years ago.
